Description
As with so many of today’s premier Italian workshop makes, the story of Rinaldo begins at Mastro de Paja. The latter was a workshop founded by Giancarlo Guidi (later of Ser Jacopo) and Giannino Spadoni (later of Fiamma di Re), which the brothers Elio and Guido Rinaldo worked for as teenagers in the 1970s. At the end of the 1980s, the two departed Mastro de Paja to found their own make under their surname. Thus, Rinaldo was born.
For those who find that Rinaldo’s Titania pipes are not quite large enough for their liking, Elio and Guido have another series of pipes even grander in scale: the Megas. The principal differentiator is bowl size; Titania and Megas pipes have much larger bowls than a typical Rinaldo, meaning what they lack (comparatively, at least) in length, they more than make up for in depth. This Calabash for example, dressed in the brothers’ stony Lithos rustication, boasts a chamber nearly 2 and 1/2 inches deep, which could satisfy a whole evening with a flake cut and a relaxed pace. Size isn’t everything, of course, but it wouldn’t be a Rinaldo pipe if it wasn’t also very beautiful. While the majority of the bowl sports a warm brown pebble-dash finish, the rim has been left smooth, emulating a more traditional calabash, upon which one finds a veritable halo of bird’s-eye.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original box and sleeve.
