W.O. Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe-making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans “Former” Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen.
The “65” was an early shape in the development of the W.O. Larsen workshop, one designed at the beginning of the 1960s, back when Sven Knudsen was the workshop’s foreman and, consequently, creator of many of the shapes made there. As with many of W.O. Larsen’s shapes during that time, it was relatively traditional in form, taking the guise of a large Canadian rendition with a slightly brandy-ish bowl, giving it just a little Danish edge. This one is dressed in one of the workshop’s early contrast finishes, the Super Two-Tone, breathing even more life into its prominent bird’s-eye and cross-grain patterns.
The condition is good. Some rim darkening, chamber slightly over-reamed, and some finish fading.
