Description

WO Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe-making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans ‘Former’ Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen.

What do you get if you cross a Dublin with a swan? Well, aside from a few poems by W.B. Yeats, probably something like this. Handmade in the venerable W.O. Larsen workshop, this Super grade sandblast certainly has something of the swan shapes found in the portfolios of Sven Knudsen and Hans Former Nielsen (both W.O. Larsen alum), combining it with the broad-bowled, organically-inclined Dublin shapes that came to define Danish pipe making from the 1970s onward. This pipe looks to be from that decade, and possibly its later years, given the rather uncommon—and rather striking—ruby red sandblast it wears (in the workshop’s early decades, the choice of finishes was very limited).

The condition is good. Some inner rim darkening and some minor blemishes to the finish.
