WO Larsen Super 48 Sandblasted Dublin w/ Horn Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Out of stock

Description

WO Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe-making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans ‘Former’ Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen.

When the W.O. Larsen was first opened, its foreman was Sven Knudsen, one of the pioneers of Danish pipe making as we know it today. As a consequence, many of the designs put out by the workshop were either created by Knudsen himself, or at least gestured at a strong influence on his part. The shape “48,” seen here, was one such pipe, recalling Knudsen’s preference for slender, tall, and eminently elegant neoclassical approaches to the Dublin form. It was also something of a flagship shape for W.O. Larsen, being made right from the workshop’s beginnings up until its final years, where it was released as part of a special issue to commemorate the 121st anniversary of the W.O. Larsen company. I would guess that this particular example would have been made between the 1960s and 1970s, judging by the nomenclature.

The condition is fair. Some rim darkening, finish fading, and slight weathering of the pipe’s horn ferrule.
