WO Larsen Smooth Lovat Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates
Out of stock
Description
WO Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans “Former” Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen.
While the Danes are known for their unusual and experimental designs, it’s hard to overstate how fond they are of more traditional shapes. Sixten Ivarsson loved his Dublins and Zulus; Tom Eltang is famously partial to the pokers and the cutty; and many W.O. Larsen alumni kept a place on their portfolio for classic shapes. This one, for example, is not too far from an Anglo-French factory chart, taking the form of a decidedly stout and stubby Lovat rendition. Though I can’t say who made it, it does look like something Former might have designed when he was W.O. Larsen’s foreman, is it is strongly reminiscent of the pipes he’s made under his own name, and for the Bentley make.
The condition is very good. Some rim darkening and finish fading.
