Description

Trey Rice’s journey into becoming a pipe-maker began in 2009, progressing in parallel to his undergraduate and graduate studies in architecture. As a result, Rice has an acute sense of form and function, which he has himself partly credited to his studies and work as an architect. He has a broad range of influences, from Rad Davis, to Tom Eltang, to Paolo Becker, all of which have contributed something towards his pursuit of producing high-grade pipes and consequently his prominence as a member of the contemporary American pipe-making movement.

This particular pipe is a billiard, but it would be more accurate to call it a Danish billiard, or a Danish American billiard. Its a shape that has its origins in Danish pipe-makers such as Jess Chonowitsch and which was later further developed by Americans such as Adam Davidson – and, as we can see, has here been reinterpreted by Rice. It’s a fairly light, beautifully sandblasted short billiard, with a black ebonite stem and what looks to be a horn ferrule. It is a distinctly modern classic, for those that like to blend tradition with a whisper of the avant-garde.
