Description
Torben Dansk started out life as a brand created by the Danish pipe maker Torben Hetler. Over the years, however, Torben Dansk became closely affiliated with Dan Pipe, a retailer in Germany, with production of Torben Dansk pipes being contracted out to various European workshops. Poul Winslow, for example, made pipes for Dan Pipe’s Torben Dansk, as has Oldrich Jirsa in recent years. In addition, legendary artisans have designed shapes for the make, including Jess Chonowitsch.
This one is a highly assertive hybrid design made by Oldrich Jirsa, named the “Kaumi.” Based on my research, Jirsa took inspiration from blowfish shapes when creating it, though one can see that he took it in a very different direction to the usual. There is something of the blowfish, though in a rotated form, in its flattened fore and rear, but there’s also a blending of the shape with others, such as the acorn, the shield, and the pickaxe. To this, Jirsa added a two-tone color palette that paired a partial, black micro-rustication and acrylic mouthpiece with a light brown, smooth polished rim.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating, having come to us in a new old stock lot from Europe. It is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.
