Svendborg 302 Sandblasted Apple Rhodesian Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

To most, Svendborg is simply a small town on the island of Funen in Denmark. But to Danish pipe collectors, it is arguably as significant a place as Copenhagen. This is because the town has been the home base of some of the most revered pipe makers in Denmark, such as Manduela Riger Kusk or Kaj Rasmussen. But a significant part of the reason for this inordinate concentration of pipe-making talent can be credited to two men and the company they founded: Jens “Tao” Nielsen and Poul Ilsted Bech, and Svendborg Piber. Having struck up a friendship when both working for Erik Nording, Tao and Ilsted soon decided to leave Nording and form their own pipe making partnership. After a short run under the Tao & Ilsted make, the two bought a factory to manufacture their designs at a larger scale, which took the town of Svendborg, in which it was situated, as its namesake. Over the years, a number of great carvers worked with Tao and Ilsted at Svendborg, including the aforementioned Kaj Ramussen, Svend Hangaard, and Henrik Jorgensen.

It should never be underestimated just how much the legendary Scandinavian artisans—the individuals whose work came to define the “Danish style” of pipe making—have, historically, been fond of “traditional” pipes. Figures like Sixten Ivarsson, Hans “Former” Nielsen, and Tom Eltang (to name just a few) created many an unusual shape across their careers, but the shapes they themselves favored have been ones like the Dublin, the poker, and the apple. The genesis of Svendborg was much the same; Tao and Ilsted both worked for Erik Nording, another pioneer of the Danish style, but neither particularly liked the pipes Nording had them make, leading them to found a company whose designs were a little more classical. This one is a good example. It’s essentially a compact apple rendition in the Anglo-French vein, with just a slight bit of “Danishness” added by way of a pair of bead-lines more typical of a Rhodesian. If one looks at the solo pipes of Tao especially, such shapes are his bread and butter, with Svendborg being another expression of that proclivity.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
