Stanwell Handmade 13, Reg era, Sandblasted Billiard Estate Briar Pipe [SOLD OUT]

Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

While it is not known who designed this shape 13 for Stanwell, don’t let that put you off. It’s actually a fascinating example of the make’s early post-1948 output. While the shape 13, a medium sized billiard, is still produced today, during Stanwell’s ‘registry era’ (1948-70), the stem was altogether different. Instead of the contemporary, standard saddle stem, Stanwell experimented with a number of different stem configurations, with this one having a fantail stem somewhat similar to that of England’s Sasieni.

The condition is excellent. The black sandblast is still crisp and rugged, with no handling marks to note; the rim is similarly crisp and without blemishes; and the vulcanite, fantail stem is free of tooth marks. We’ve even managed to carefully preserve the original stem logo.
