Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Stanwell’s shape “03” is, funnily enough, one of the oldest shapes in the make’s portfolio. It is also, along with a similar shape, the “14” one of the few Stanwell designs to have remained in all but continuous production since the make’s earliest years. To understand why this is, one has to remember that, when Stanwell was founded, Poul Nielsen’s company had the intention of producing English-style pipes, with the brand (including the “Stanwell” name) emulating the aesthetics of those in England. Of course, not long after Stanwell was born, Nielsen met Sixten Ivarsson and the two went about revamping Stanwell’s output almost entirely, resulting in the legacy of “Danish design” that it retains to this day. But Stanwell has, nonetheless, kept a few traditional shapes in its roster, as it is difficult to improve on the classics, even for Danes. This one comes from Stanwell’s Vario line, characterized by a mixed finish of smooth and sandblasted sections. Judging by the stem logo, I’d imagine this to be an early 1980s make, from a time just after the discontinuation of the trademark registration number stamp (which defined the “reg era” in Stanwell historiography), but before the switch to a larger, metal “S” logo.
The condition is fair. Some rim darkening and a few minor scratches on the bowl.
