Stanwell 1979 Jubilee Reg Era 44 Smooth Pear Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates
Out of stock
Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Along with the “13,” the “35,” the “36” the “71,” and the “89,” the shape “44,” was one of many designs based on the traditional Anglo-French pear created by Sixten Ivarsson for Stanwell in the 1960s and 1970s. As far as shapes go, Ivarsson created more pear renditions for Stanwell than almost any other, in fact. This one is a very curious specimen, having been stamped “Jubilee 1979” and with the make’s abridged trademark registration number, and such pipes are one reason why our guide to dating Stanwell pipes puts the end of the “reg era,” or “registration era,” around 1980, rather than 1970 as is often claimed. Exactly which jubilee the pipe refers to, I’m not entirely sure, though as Stanwell did open its Borup factory in 1969, it is quite possible that these pipes marked 10 years of operation there.
The condition is fair. Some slight charring to the rim and chamber slightly over-reamed.
