Description

Latvia is not a country commonly associated with pipe-making, but it should be. After all, Charles Peterson was originally born in that same Baltic state. In more recent years, a host of highly talented Latvian artisan carvers have emerged onto the global pipe scene. One of these artisans, a former apprentice to Russia’s Victor Yashtylov, is Sergei Senatorov.

It’s impossible to overstate the impact Sixten Ivarsson had on post-war pipe making, though some of his designs have been more popular than others. This is also reflected in the works of artisans who followed him, with certain shapes, such as the Peewit, or the Oliphant, being the subject of many an homage, while others receive far less attention. This squat Dublin from Latvia’s Sergei Senatorov certainly has an Ivarssonian tinge to it, though the point of reference appears to be the squat Dublin shapes designed by Stanwell by the latter. These would be shapes such as the 86 or the 95, though Senarotov has certainly added his own design tweaks with the pipe seen here. More compact and travel friendly, Senarotov’s rendition also adds a tastefully beveled rim whose smooth finish stands out against a simmering bird’s-eye sandblast on its rim, and  craggy ring grain around the entirety of the pipe’s low-slung bowl.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
