Description
Sebastian Heck is part of younger generation of highly skilled artisans to have emerged from Germany in recent years. Based in Heidelberg, Heck took up pipe smoking—and, ultimately, pipe-making—as part of a conscious effort toward slowing down in an otherwise constantly accelerating modern world. Like many pipe makers, Heck took his first steps into the craft as a restorer of estate and heirloom pieces, which in time brought with it an expansion of his workshop and the tools housed within it. With this as a base, creating new pipes of his own was a natural progression. Heck’s development has been greatly influenced by the Danish and German schools of pipe design, and has included time spent learning directly from fellow German artisans, such as Dirk Heinemann.
While many of Sebastian Heck’s designs lean on Danish and and Danish-American influences, such as in his homages to Lars Ivarsson, Jess Chonowitsch, and J. Alan, this one is a little more traditional. With a figure reminiscent of the “bell Dublin” shapes widely associated with Charatan, there’s much more of an English tinge to it. In fact, I could see the bowl coming out of Charatan’s freehand workshop under Reuben Charatan or Herman Lane, especially with its excellent straight grain and modest use of plateaux. Bringing the design a little further back into the old world, however, is its imitation horn acrylic stem, creating an aesthetic that answers the question of what might have happened if Barry Jones et al. had taken up pipe making just a few decades earlier.
