Description

Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.

Recently, Sean Reum has been taking inspiration from older Danish pipe-making designs, such as those of Sixten Ivarsson. There are certainly parallels between this Reum and Stanwell’s shape 19 (by Ivarsson), for example, with both being bent Dublins with rounded, triangular rims. Reum’s shape is, however, very much his own. For one thing, the bowl is flatter at its bow, allowing the pipe to be an upright sitter. The pipe also has a partial plateau rim, and a half-saddle stem made from scarlet ebonite. This, combined with the sleek, black stain of the bowl makes for a striking appearance. On a final note, the pipe weighs a mere 40 grams, meaning it should be a comfortable enough clencher for veteran smokers, and will otherwise rest easily on a flat surface when needed.
