Savinelli Trekking 703 KS Smooth Lovat Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked, 6mm

It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

Now this is a blast from the past, and a very unique one at that: a Savinelli from the long-discontinued Trekking line. As the name suggests, the Trekking was specially designed for pipe smoking on the go, such as out walking in the wilderness (sometimes referred to as “lunting” in the pipe community). Now, if you are going to take your pipe out and about with you, the one thing you definitely don’t want to do is drop said pipe. After all, the second worst thing that could happen when lunting is irreparably damaging or losing your pipe from it falling against a hard surface, or into a crevasse, or a body of water (the absolute worst, of course, would be taking the fall oneself). Savinelli’s solution was to add some extra grip to the bowl of the pipe, in the form of five rubber rings nested in ridges in the briar. It’s an interesting approach, and it doesn’t look bad either. It certainly leaves one less thing to worry about when smoking in the great outdoors, though I’d still recommend “keeping one’s eyes on the road” as much as possible. Wouldn’t want to end up a modern-day Thales, caught with one’s head in the clouds.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original draw-string bag (very fitting). The pipe is chambered to allow for the use of 6mm filters if desired, though it will perform perfectly well without one.
