Description
It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.
Like the Charatan freehand workshop in mid-20th century England, or Tsuge’s Ikebana workshop in late-20th century and 21st century Japan, Savinelli has its own, special area of the company’s campus reserved for master artisans, where non-standard pipe shapes are carved using artisan techniques. This one came to us with the last batch of new old stock pipes from a shop closure in Europe, and while it is stamped as a grade 4, I can’t help but think that, today, it would be at least a grade 6, perhaps even higher. After all, Savinelli has, more, introduced partial and full sandblasted Autographs, as well as darker smooth finishes for the lower numbered grades. This one, on the other hand, with its light, natural finish, bares everything, and understandably so. Leaning slightly Danish in its egg-like shaping, it is a genuine beauty from Savinelli’s master freehand carvers.
The pipe is completely unsmoked and comes with its original presentation case and sleeve. The pipe is chambered to allow for the use of 6mm filters, such as Savinelli’s balsa filters, but will perform perfectly well without one, too.
