It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for over 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

2026 marks 150 years since Achille Savinelli Sr opened what was at the time a modest tobacconist shop in Milan, Italy. Of course, Achille Sr soon branched out into manufacturing his own pipes, which he would sell alongside the other wares in his shop, for which he created the Savinelli make. In this day and age, every additional year that a pipe venture survives is worth celebrating, and a milestone like a 150th anniversary is even more so. To mark this special occasion, Savinelli has produced a run of limited edition pipes, each of which ties into the company’s history in some way. One such pipe is the Capri Root Briar, or, rather, the 150th Anniversary Capri Root Briar.

The Capri series, which included the Capri Root Briar, was among the first to be produced at Savinelli’s Milan factory, which Achille Savinelli Jr established shortly after the Second World War. Distinguished by its quintessentially Italian, pebble-dash rusticated finish and jet black vulcanite mouthpiece, the Capri Root Briar was exceedingly popular in the 1960s and 1970s. It was also a firm favorite of Achille Jr, who had his own signature rendition in the form of a Bing-style slender billiard in the Capri Root Briar dress. The Capri Root Briar has, however, been all but discontinued for many decades, with its most recent appearance being as part of a different limited edition series, the Le Mie Pipe, around the early 2000s.

Now the Capri Root Briar is back once more—though it is, to reiterate, part of a strictly limited release, and whether we will see something akin to it again in the future is anyone’s guess. The 150th Anniversary Capri Root Briar is available in a variety of Savinelli’s most popular shapes, as well a number of popular shapes from the 20th century that are no longer in regular production.
