The House of Rattray was originally a tobacconist, opening in Perth, Scotland, in 1903, under the oversight of Charles Rattray. House of Rattray soon became a blending house (whose blends are still sold to this day under the Rattray’s name) and a purveyor of Rattray-brand pipes, made for the tobacconist by established English pipe makers. Over the years, the name changed hands, with contemporary Rattray’s pipes and tobaccos being produced under the umbrella of German’s Kopp company (formerly Kolhase & Kopp). Today, Rattray’s pipes are manufactured by various major European makers, such as Chacom and Butz-Choquin in France and Brebbia and L’anatra in Italy.

For those who have never had the opportunity to visit, the Lowlands encompasses what is technically the “bottom half” of Scotland, though commonly it refers to the sprawling, verdant, rural pastures of that area, in contrast with the more more mountainous terrains to its north. Rattray’s Lowland line is a tribute to its namesake, whose defining feature is its unconventional, green finish, mirroring the greenery found there. This finishing is quite difficult to accomplish, given the typical tools used in pipe manufacture, but it is one that has paid off. The Lowland’s green is not a simple matte green, but rather one that manages to give the briar underneath ample breathing room. One can see, for example, on this Dublin, billowing bird’s-eye that lends to an even greater evocation of those sweet especial scenes.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, and comes with its original box, sleeve, and promotional materials. It is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.
