Description

I used to say that Pipe Tristan’s Tristan Lefebvre was part of a “new wave” of “up-and-coming” artisans from France, the very birthplace of the briar pipe. But that description doesn’t do him justice these days. Lefebvre isn’t so much a “part” of the latest generation of French artisans as the craftsman leading the charge; likewise, he is no longer “up-and-coming,” but has already secured himself a place alongside historic compatriots such as Alain Albuisson, Paul Lanier, and Pierre Morel Sr and Jr. In fact, in 2025, he was inducted into the Confrérie des Maîtres Pipiers de Saint-Claude, a prestigious French association of master pipe makers whose ranks have included Albuisson, Lanier, and Morel the younger.

France’s Tristan Lefebvre has been on a real traditionalist kick lately, something plainly evident from his numerous LC studies. In this latest batch, which includes some of his LC renditions, there have been a couple of other designs that are similarly classically inclined, though with a slightly more modern twist added to each of them. In the case of this one, it appears that Lefebvre is paying tribute to another icon of pipe making with a strong connection to the classics. Rather than a specific shape, however, that icon is a person: Tom Eltang. Drawing on much the same functionalist principles and motifs exemplified by the latter, here Lefebvre has crafted his own lightweight, almost Bing length, slender billiard, with a four-knuckle stretch of bamboo between its bowl and mouthpiece.
