Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

As with every great, storied make, Peterson’s shape chart has changed numerous times since the birth of Kapp & Peterson in the late 19th century. New shapes debuted in just about every decade of Peterson’s history, but many more have been retired, or re-released on a very limited basis. Peterson’s early 2010s Sandblast Collection was one of these limited releases. Pipes in the Collection were manufactured using well-seasoned, pre-turned stummels from Peterson’s vast warehouses—many of which had been intended for shapes that were subsequently discontinued—finished in a craggy, ebony sandblast, and fitted with a vulcanite stem and nickel collar.

As for which shape this one is, it’s hard to say. Mark Irwin’s Peterson Pipe Notes features some great writing on Peterson’s long shank shapes, including in its noting that, for Peterson at least, what we today call a “Liverpool” was called a “Bolton” or “Bolton Billiard” by Peterson in early years. Irwin’s research also demonstrates a significant paucity of Liverpool shapes (whatever one wishes to call them) in the modern era, especially relative to Canadians and Lovats. The closest I can think of for this one would be the 1990s “D” shapes, made to compete with the Danish market. With its slightly brandy-ish bowl, it is possible that this might once have been destined to become a D2, for example.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It also comes with its original box and sleeve, having arrived at MBSD Pipes via a now-closed pipe shop.
