Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

The Dunmore is a rather strange pipe in Peterson’s historical portfolio. The reason for this is that, at least originally, it was a System pipe, i.e., a pipe featuring Peterson’s patented System, with a reservoir drilled into the base of the shank to collect moisture, as well as a P-Lip mouthpiece. Peterson has, since its earliest years, produced a wide variety of System pipes, though the Dunmore was unique in that it was an unmounted System, lacking the nickel, or silver, mounts typical of System pipes, having a simple push fitment instead. As can be seen here, the end of the shank was briar alone, though with a distinctive carving that almost made it look like the pipe was leather-wrapped. After various redesigns, including a version that dropped the System drilling entirely, the Dunmore was discontinued entirely, though it remains a nice little curiosity that pops up on the estates market every now and then.

The condition is good. Some rim darkening and chamber slightly over-reamed. This particular Dunmore has a fishtail, rather than a P-Lip, mouthpiece. I’m not sure if that makes it a replacement or if one iteration or another of the Dunmore could be purchased with a fishtail mouthpiece, as some other System pipes can be. I would be remiss if I did not mention it, though.
