Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin
Peterson has been putting out special, limited edition releases of pipes since the 1990s. Some, like the Pipe of the Year and the Christmas Pipe, have remained annual traditions. Others, like the 4th of July and the Summertime have, sadly, not. For about half a decade in the late 2010s, the latter was a yearly staple, with distinctly summery designs applied to classic Peterson shapes. This particular Summertime, a novel rendering of the shape 01 bent pot, is in fact from the very first Summertime release, way back in 2016. It’s a bold design, but one with a quite simple reasoning behind it: the amber-toned acrylic stems were to represent the sun, while the royal blue bowls represented the sky. I’m not sure what the nickel army mounts represented—clouds, perhaps? After all, both are often found to have silver linings.
The condition is good. Some minor inner rim charring and I think the finish has faded a little, though it’s still plenty blue to my eyes.
