Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
In 1995, Peterson released a special, limited edition set of pipes whose designs dated back to the make’s earliest years. This first iteration of the “Antique Collection” was comprised of four shapes, each being traceable to one debuted by Peterson between 1903 and 1910. In later years, further Antique Collection models were added. This short and stout “1903” Dublin comes from the Collection’s first iteration, tracing its form to a long-lost shape from the year of its namesake. As Peterson historian Mark Irwin has noted, the shape itself is a fascinating one, unlike almost any other in Peterson’s more recent output. While it includes the make’s famous P-lip stem, it also includes the signature “space-fitting” tenon that is, today, only seen on Deluxe System pipes and their variants.
The condition is very good. Some minor inner rim darkening and slight finish fading.
