Description

Peder Jeppesen is a Danish artisan who, with his son Noah, crafts P. Jeppesen and Neerup pipes. As is tradition in Denmark, Jeppesen got his start making pipes in the workshop of Karl Erik, and then in the workshop of Erik Nording, before going solo. Despite graduating from his apprenticeships amidst an incredibly competitive artisan scene, Jeppesen has since become one of the most prominent and successful pipe makers in both Denmark and the world. As for how he managed to accomplish this, it is likely that the distinctive nature of his designs—even against the broader backdrop of Scandinavian pipe making—has been a significant contributing factor. Blending the staple, organic forms common to Danish pipe making, such as apples, eggs, acorns, and strawberries, with unorthodox decorative elements, such as brighter color schemes, rings, and other adornments, has ensured that Jeppesen’s pipes are rarely mistaken for those of anyone else.

Peder Jeppesen’s pipes are roughly divided into two categories: his Neerup pipes, which fully embody his inimitable style at a surprisingly affordable price point; and the pipes made under his given name, P. Jeppesen, which represent his higher-grade output. These categories are further subdivided into other categories, such Neerup’s “Basic” and “Classic” lines. With the P. Jeppesen pipes, things get a little more complicated. Today, these pipes are separated into lines such as the “Ida Easy Cut” (for shapes not normally made by Jeppesen) and the “Boutique” (for designs that include even more lavish ornamentation than usual). This pipe is an example of one of Jeppesen’s Ida pipes. Not unlike the pipes of his former mentors, it is a very Danish freehand in the tradition of the “Fancy,” though it also has a little of the more measured asymmetry of the great Japanese artisans to it. With its “whiptail” style shank, it could almost pass for a very modern fugu, such as those of Gotoh, albeit one dressed in Jeppesen’s own, unmistakably colorful contrast sandblast finishing.

The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening.
