Description

Nørding was founded by Erik Nørding in the 1960s, and is one of the oldest remaining companies to come out of the Scandinavian pipe-making renaissance that began in the mid-20th century. Now in his 80s, Erik Nørding is one of the most experienced and skilled pipe-makers in the world, and over the decades he has also been a teacher of other Danish masters, such as Poul Ilsted, Svend Axel Celius, Jens Tao Nielsen, Peder Jeppesen, and Søren Erik Andersen.

Aside from a few of the pipes Preben Holm made, deep, rusticated finishes are historically not typically associated with Danish Fancy freehand pipes. Ever the trailblazer, however, Erik Nording has found a number of ways to put such finishes to work in the last few decades. This would be one example, and while it has affinities with some of Erik’s contemporary lines, it looks to be a little older than the Freehand pipes made by Nording today. There’s a great dynamism to the design, to which the vermiculated, partially rusticated base of the bowl certainly adds, though it’s also very interesting from the perspective of form and grain, with a “twisting” motif present in its shaping, and copious, contrast-lit flame grain rising from its smooth sections.

The condition is good. Some minor scratches and handling marks.
