Description

While some pipe-makers take inspiration from the natural world, or from the technologies of present and past, few of them in the contemporary seek to represent these forms in their work. Czech artisan Ondrej Bárta of Moonlight pipes does just that, in a way that recalls the intricate, figural carvings of briar pipes from the turn of the 20th century. But Ondrej also departs from the figural approach of early briar pipes by combining it with high-grade materials and a careful attention to grain patterns that is far more modern.

Ondrej Bárta’s “Steampunk” Oom Pauls are among his most popular and best selling pipes, with each one meticulously carved over long periods to achieve their signature look. More recently, Bárta has started branching out with his Steampunk motifs, incorporating them into other shapes. This one, for example, features the same industrial aesthetics as his Steampunk Oom Pauls, evoking the weathered, bolted leather found on the new devices of 18th and 19th century Europe. Instead of an Oom Paul, however, the basic form is closer to a broad, squat Danish tomato, creating a unique effect that brings the overall design closer to H.R. Geiger. Geiger is, of course, best known for his work on the Alien franchise, but his style even outside of that is well known for its uncanny, and often unsettling, intermingling of organic and industrial elements, in a way not unlike what Bárta has achieved here.
