Moonlight Pipes “Steampunk” Oom Paul Handmade Briar Pipe, New

Description

While some pipe-makers take inspiration from the natural world, or from the technologies of present and past, few of them in the contemporary seek to represent these forms in their work. Czech artisan Ondrej Bárta of Moonlight pipes does just that, in a way that recalls the intricate, figural carvings of briar pipes from the turn of the 20th century. But Ondrej also departs from the figural approach of early briar pipes by combining it with high-grade materials and a careful attention to grain patterns that is far more modern.

Ondrej Bárta is renowned for his figural pipe making skills and predilections. And one of his most sought after designs is his “Steampunk” Oom Paul shapes. It is not difficult to see why, nor is it difficult to see why such pipes take a very long time to construct and, consequently, have a long waiting list. As for the design itself, while the bowl is all briar, it has been meticulously carved and assembled to mimic the bolted leather and pneumatic mechanisms associated with the early industrial age. In fact, this patchwork of leather has even been given a “weathered” look for extra authenticity. The pipe also—quite fittingly—features a brass faux spigot mount, which pairs well with a hand-cut olive camouflage ebonite stem and shank plug, the latter being included for ease of cleaning and general maintenance.
