Description

At MBSD we sell a lot of high-grade, high-quality pipes from various iconic makes, but the pipes we’re most proud of are our meerschaums. Right from the beginning, we wanted to offer the best smoking meers on the market, and to do this, we had them made with two distinct features. First, we made sure that they were made with block meerschaum that was carefully selected to be the most lightweight, pure, and porous available, meaning it would also color more quickly and evenly as it is smoked. Second, for our Deluxe meerschaums, we had the pipes made with a patented Briar-Mortise system that is closer to the stem connection on a briar pipe than a standard meerschaum. This is because, on our Deluxe models, the mortise is made from briar itself, while the tenons used are made from Delrin. This allows for more precision construction of the pipe’s draft hole, as well as a general extra durability and longevity.

The bent billiard is a classic of briar pipe-making. It is also a minor classic of meerschaum pipe making. This is less to do with Turkish meerschaum carving than with Austrian (specifically, Vienna) meerschaum pipes, such as those of Fischer and Andreas Bauer. As with a few recent MBSD Meerschaums, inspiration for this one was taken from 20th century Austrian meerschaum houses, as well as classic briar renditions of bent billiards—such as those of Comoy’s, Peterson, Dunhill, et al., but there was also a little of the “neo-classical” put into its design. Here the influences came from post-war pipe makers who often don’t quite fit the mold of “Danish,” or “Scandinavian” style pipe making, but still produce renditions of classic shapes that are not quite like others. Carvers such as Ingo Garbe, Hans Gunter Nostke, and a few pieces by Karlheinz Joura served as just the influences required to make this one traditional, but with a very elegant, slightly curvaceous twist.
