Description
Based in Puglia, Italy, Manelli pipes are made by Vito and Maria Manelli. Not unlike Bruto and Rosaria Sordini, or Claudio and Maria Cavicchi, Manelli is one of a number of Italian artisan brands born out of a husband and wife partnership, with pipe making being very much a family affair.
In a similar vein, this particular Manelli is what one might regard as a “mini magnum,” or “pocket magnum.” As with quite a few Italian artisan and workshop brands, Manelli is known for its intermittent production of pipes that are very tall and broad, but without quite crossing into the territory of something you’d need a violin case to carry around. The design is an interesting blend, with quite Italian proportions and light, blonde finishing, while also combining the plateau-topped freehand style of Danish fancies with a more traditional paneling of the pipe’s Dublin bowl. The finishing, however, is more distinctly “Manelli,” eschewing the conventional Italian pebble-dash approach for a rougher, more rugged texturing of the briar.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, having come to us in a large batch of new old stock pipes from a shop closure in Europe.
