Lasse Skovgaard Sandblasted Dublin w/ Horn Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Danish pipe-making is notable not only for its masters, but its dynasties. The most famous is, of course, Sixten Ivarsson and his son Lars Ivarsson and granddaughter Nanna Ivarsson; but there is also Anne Julie, her son Bernhard Julie, and her grandson Johannes “Suhr” Rasmussen; Ib Loran and his daughter Tine Loran; Kurt Balleby and his daughter Tine Balleby. The list goes on. And it would not be complete without a mention of Lasse Skovgaard Jorgensen, the son of WO Larsen alum and carver of its Straight Grain pipes, Benni Jorgensen. Lasse himself made WO Larsen pipes as a teenager and debuted his solo work in 2004. In the years since, he has become such a renowned figure on the international high-grade scene that his parentage is an afterthought, if a thought at all.

As an estates seller, sometimes you get a pipe that comes through that feels difficult to talk about. Not because there’s anything bad with the pipe—quite the opposite, because it’s such a nice piece that talking about it seems like it would never do it justice. “A picture is worth a thousand words,” as the saying goes, or something along those lines. Hopefully my pictures do that. I suppose I should at least write something down, though. The pipe is “Danish” in its Dublin shaping, but not extravagantly so. The sandblasting is some of the best I’ve seen, with ring grain comparable to J.T. Cooke, or Lee Von Erck in its depth and consistency. And the pipe is wonderfully lightweight, to the point where I’d say most would find it a comfortable clencher. On a last note, the horn accent on the stem is expertly cut, which is to be expected, given that Skovgaard was carving horn tampers for W.O. Larsen before he ever turned a block of briar.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. The horn stem ring is slightly weathered, but nothing major.
