Description

Kaywoodie pipes are as American as apple pie. Starting in 1919 as a pipe brand for KB&B, a pipe shop dating all the way back to 1851, Kaywoodie has since then been a staple of American-made pipes. In the present, many Kaywoodies are collectors’ items, in addition to being fantastic smokers.

The Kaywoodie Hi-Bowl was introduced in the late 1950s, and was a distinct addition to the designs previously offered by the make. Hi-Bowl shapes were essentially stacked variations on more traditional ones, with narrower and slightly taller chambers and generally longer figures than was typical at the time. What’s perhaps most striking about many of the Hi-Bowl shapes, at least from a historical perspective, is their resemblance to certain briars that came out of Denmark around the time Kaywoodie’s did, especially the famous “Dan Shapes” of the Pibe-Dan workshop. Whether there was some cross-Atlantic influence there, or whether they simply sprang from the same root, I do not know, though I do know that I’m partial to both.

The condition is fair. Minor rim darkening, chamber slightly over-reamed, and some scratches around the bowl.
