J.M. Boswell is one of North America’s most revered artisan pipe makers, with Boswell pipes typically selling out within minutes of going on sale. With a pipe-making career that started in the 1970s, J.M. Boswell has become the equivalent of a household name in the pipe world, both for his pipes and for serving as the patriarch of family-owned Pennsylvania tobacconist Boswell’s.
The poker is a near-universally beloved pipe shape, from the most traditional of English makes to trailblazing Danish artisans, but there is something spiritually American about it, from its stout and sturdy figure to its no-nonsense practicality. When it comes to American pipe making, few have carved out a niche so representative of the national culture in this way as J.M. Boswell, so it shouldn’t surprise that there’s a fair few poker renditions in his portfolio—nor that they are incredibly popular. This one is a thoroughly rugged affair, with a wide, thick walled, plateau-topped, and deeply rusticated bowl, with enough heft behind it to ensure that it will sit comfortably on just about any surface. What more could one want from such a shape?
The condition is very good. Minor inner rim darkening and slight finish fading.
