If you’ve been keeping up with the world of Chinese pipe making, their artisan scene has been really taking off over the last decade. Like the great Danish institutions of old, many of these pipes are produced in artisan workshops such as Zhiputang, Qi Studio, and GH Zhang. Hong Kong’s HS Studio follows a similar model, with a team of expert in-house carvers crafting high-quality briars in a variety of styles.
Bridging the volcano shapes of traditional and modern, Danish Danish, there is something quietly elegant about this pipe from HS Studio. I’m reminded a little of the more reserved works of pipe makers such as Poul Ilsted and, even further back, even some of the shapes of Sixten Ivarsson. The sandblasting is excellent, too—a little more deep and craggy than most pipes, traditional or otherwise, to the point where it almost looks like a rusticated finish.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
