Description

Eclesias Pipes are made by Pavel Eclesias Holub, a Czech artisan and a genuine cult sensation in contemporary handmade pipes. Like his friend and former teacher, Jiří “Biftek” Maczko, Holub is one of the most prominent and recognizable figures in the Czech artisan community today, one that has become increasingly central in the broader European scene. Part of this no doubt comes down to his distinctive approach to the aesthetics of pipes, incorporating shapes and finishes that are, at times, singularly “Czech” and, at others, entirely of his own making.

It is little wonder that this is the case, however, when one looks at the pipes in question. Far from being derivative of Burak or Eltang, pipes like this one, from Eclesias, continue to be inventive in form and—perhaps most of all—finishing. This extra wide shank rendition features a deep contrast sandblast, whose layered tones are mirrored by the pipe’s swirling ebonite mouthpiece. As is typical of Holub’s work, the latter has been perfectly cross-cut, ensuring that the spiral of its layered hues is right in the center of the mouthpiece’s trapezoidal figure.
