Dunhill 1973 Bruyere 926 Smooth Bent Billiard w/ Silver Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates
Out of stock
Description
To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.
As mentioned in a previous listing, in the 1970s, prior to the introduction of the company’s standardized shape system (first as five-digit strings, then as four-digit), Dunhill manufactured a number of quite strange shapes. The “965” was certainly one of the strangest, but the “926,” seen here, was also very distinctive. I’m going to put it down as “bent billiard” and “pear” in the categories we have, though it is really more of a hybrid between the two, especially with its slightly flattened base. Whatever you call it, Dunhill certainly thought highly enough of it to mount it with a sterling silver collar. Distinct and distinguished, it seems.
The condition is good. The finish has faded quite significantly (though not without revealing very nice grain patterns), and there is some charring on the inner rim.
