Don-Lou (Dominic Cazzetta) XL Partially Rusticated Freehand Dublin Estate Briar Pipe

Out of stock

Description

Don-Lou pipes were made by Dominic Cazzetta, an early American freehand carver who prided himself on making pipes that were au naturel, one might say. Not unlike the pipes of Ed Burak (crafted by artisans such as Joe Cortegiano), Cazzetta’s pipes were never stained or varnished. They were simply carved in a shape that best fit the briar, and polished, leaving them in a near-naked state. Cazzetta made pipes in a variety of styles, from traditional Dublins to intricate, figural pieces, though many of his pipes were, like this one, slightly rugged, naturalistic freehands, with a liberal use of live plateaux edge and a little partial rustication here and there when needed. Cazzetta passed away in the early 1990s, though not before being featured in outlets like New York Magazine, where his distinctive, high-quality pipe craftsmanship was highlighted.

This one is a particularly large, stacked example, with a shaping evocative of Danish Fancy freehands, blending straight grain and roughed panels in a trumpeting, towering form.

The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and minor handling marks.
