Description

Digby was a sub-brand made by GBD. GBD itself was founded in 1850 by the French trio Ganneval, Bondier & Donninger, before the brand was bought by English company Oppenheimer at the beginning of the 20th century. Retaining the name, Oppenheimer opened GBD factories in London and Paris to meet an increasing demand for the make’s high-quality and highly desirable pipes.

As with its parent make GBD, the Digby sub-brand employed a tripartite system for its oversized pipes. In other words, just like GBD, there were Digby pipes that were larger than average, which received one of three designations depending on just how oversized the pipe was. These were, ascendingly, the Conquest, the Collector, and the Colossus. This one is a Conquest, making it large, but very much manageable for the average pipe smoker. For a shape like the 9579, a four-paneled poker sitter within GBD’s vast shape chart, this was especially so. Despite its tall, rather large, bowl, the relatively narrow, long shank and stem allowed it to retain a surprisingly lightness in weight, with even a conquest model like this one being not much over an ounce.

The condition is fair. Rim darkening and some inner rim charring, and what appears to be a replacement stem.
