Comoy’s (c. 1930s-40s) Extraordinaire Sandblast Canadian Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates
Out of stock
Description
Comoy’s is a historic brand in pipe making, and possibly the most historic brand in the making of briar pipes. Though originally founded in 1825 by a French family from Saint Claude, France, production of Comoy’s pipes was soon moved to London, England, where it established itself as one of the quintessential English pipe companies.
“Extraordinaire” was a designation Comoy’s applied to several of their lines whenever one of its pipes was, simply put, extraordinary. Extraordinaires were sometimes much larger pipes than Comoy’s ordinarily offered (including larger renditions of standard shapes), had superior graining, or a mixture of the two. This Extraordinaire, for example, is an exceedingly long rendition of the make’s house Canadian shape, coming in at nearly 8 inches in overall length while still maintaining the sleek, lightweight proportions associated with it. The stamping is a little curious on this one, at least as pertains to dating. The arched, uppercase “Comoy’s” script over “Extraordinaire” looks to be the same as the company used during the interwar years, while the country of manufacture script looks slightly older. On the other hand, the latter is in two lines of block lettered script, rather than the circled “Made in London” over “England” found on Comoy’s pipes from around 1950 onward. I’m going to put this one down as from approximately the late 1930s to the end of the 1940s.
The condition is good for a pipe of its age. Some rim charring, slight finish fading, and minor handling marks.
