Description

Colossals is a name that has been used by a number of pipe manufacturers, which made pinning down precisely who made this one a bit of a challenge. Thankfully, I think I managed to track this one down. It appears this particular ‘Colossals’ was a line of pipes produced by Linkman & Co., a historic American pipe company in the first half of the 20th century. From what I gather, the Colossals made by Linkman are very highly regarded.

This one seems to live up to its reputation. The name is fairly accurate – at nearly 6 inches in length, it’s quite a large pipe, with a muscular bowl to boot. The shape is a foursquare, one that was very popular during the emergence of briar pipes, but which is unfortunately often neglected now. The grain is good with plenty of bird’s-eye around the bowl, hence the nice, light blonde stain that’s been applied to it. For a pipe that’s at least 70 years old, this one is in great condition. The stem has some minor chatter and the rim has some minor darkening on the inner lip, but other than that, there’s little to complain about. Smoking machines like this one will outlive us all, most likely.
