Chacom Centenaire 866 Bent Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Chacom is one of France’s most historic and iconic makes. Its founders, the Comoy family, began their career as boxwood pipe-makers in the early 1800s, before briar had even been discovered, with Henri Comoy (of Comoy’s fame) emigrating to England in 1879 and founding the country’s first briar pipe factory. In 1922, Henri and his nephews, the Chapuis, founded the Chapuis Comoy pipe factory in Saint-Claude, France, which shortly after began producing pipes bearing the partnered families’ names – ‘Cha’ for Chapuis, and ‘Com’ for Comoy. Chacom has been the biggest name in French pipes ever since.

Here’s an interesting pipe: a Chacom Centenaire. ‘Centenaire’ is French for ‘centenary,’ i.e., a celebration marking 100 years of something. Funny thing is, this isn’t one of the Centenaire pipes released recently by Chacom, which marked 100 years of the Chapuis-Comoy partnership. So, what did it commemorate? Perhaps there was another date worthy of celebration. In any case, it’s a lovely pipe. Eminently traditional and elegant in its simplicity, it is a bent billiard worthy of standing with the best of them. The contrast red staining on the bowl highlights the bird’s-eye and cross grain quite wonderfully.

The pipe is also completely unsmoked, and comes with its original box and sleeve.
