Description
BriarWorks represents the dream of many a pipe maker, being a workshop owned and stewarded by artisans whose mission is to produce affordable pipes of their own design. Founded in 2013 in Tennessee by American pipe making legends Todd Johnson and Pete Prevost, BriarWorks has gone from strength to strength in the years since, not least because of its ability to combine cutting-edge factory production techniques with high-grade artisan standards. Not unlike Pibe-Dan or Stanwell in Denmark, many a high-flying carver has been a part of the BriarWorks team, including contemporary greats such as Sam Adebayo, Micah Redmond, and Bill Shalosky.
As I’ve said before, the poker is a near-universally beloved pipe shape, from the most traditional of English makes to trailblazing Danish artisans, but there is something spiritually American about it, from its stout and sturdy figure to its no-nonsense practicality. The “C71” is BriarWorks’ take on the shape, and checks all the boxes as far as a good poker is concerned. Compact, light in weight, an easy sitter, and featuring an ample chamber, this one is dressed in BriarWorks’ house, deep contrast smooth polished finish, which juxtaposes nicely with its amber-toned acrylic mouthpiece.
