Brebbia Calabash Argento Smooth Calabash Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates, 9mm

Description

Named for the company’s home township, Brebbia was founded in 1953 by Enea Buzzi, an alum of Savinelli’s manufacturing division. Still in operation 70 years later, Brebbia is one of Italy’s oldest extant pipe companies, with production still being undertaken using simple lathes and traditional methods of hand finishing. More recently, Brebbia has also collaborated with master artisan carvers from across to design some of its pipes, such as Denmark’s Rainer Barbi, Germany’s Otto Pollner and Holger Frickert, Italy’s Fausto Fincato, and Japan’s Tsuge.

In contrast to its extravagant “First Calabash” renditions, Brebbia’s “Calabash” is a relatively modest design, one far closer to traditional briar pipes. With that said, it’s still highly distinctive, and one of the most unique designs to have come out of of Italian pipe making. Emulating the meerschaum and gourd calabashes of centuries passed, the stummel of Brebbia’s Calabash is one piece of briar, shaped to resemble the former’s signature large, conical bowl and “cap.” This Calabash comes from Brebbia’s Argento line, referring not to silverware but to the workshop’s lightly stained briars with enjoyable grain patterns.

The condition is fair. Chamber slightly over-reamed and some blemishes to the finish on the bowl. This pipe is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired and comes with its original adapter if non-filtered use is preferred.
