Description
Age (or rather, Åge) Bøgelund is a somewhat less known carver from the 20th century Danish pipe-making tradition – though he was no less a master than his contemporaries. Originally, he worked for Viggo Nielsen’s Bari pipe company, being charged with making some of its higher-grade freehands. Later, Bøgelund made pipes under his own name, each displaying a distinct style and talent, even among his celebrated Danish peers. Bøgelund’s pipes have for a long time been coveted by collectors, though in more recent years, these creations have attracted a more popular enthusiasm.
Typically, when you work for a pipe company, you’re not really “known” by the wider public. For example, how many of Ser Jacopo’s current employees do you know by name? Or Dunhill—are you familiar with anyone who works on their factory floor today? That’s not a criticism of these companies or their pipes, it’s just how commercial organizations usually work, including in the pipe world. There are sometimes exceptions, however, and Åge Bøgelund was one of them. You can find Bari Piber catalogs and advertisements, from back in the days when it was still around, which not only tout Åge Bøgelund as Bari’s head of pipe production, but also have a page or two devoted to his solo work. It would be the equivalent of a Charatan catalog that offered both high-grade freehands, made by Barry Jones, Dan Tennison, Stan Haney, et al., as well as Barry Jones brand pipes. When you look at Bøgelund’s pipes, though, you can see why the company was so proud of his work and the value his name added to the Bari brand itself. While this is one of Bøgelund’s more conservative designs, it’s nonetheless a gorgeous, straight grain Danish Dublin, complete with a halo of plateaux on its rim and a perfectly proportioned, single-knuckle bamboo insert.
The condition is very good. Minor inner rim darkening and some slight residual oxidation.
