Description
It’s always fascinating to find out what career an artisan had before getting into pipe making. Back in the day, you’d get a job at a pipe factory or workshop after finishing high school. These days, people simply get drawn into the craft out of an already existing fondness for it. That’s how Adam Remington, of Tucson, Arizona, got into it. Remington’s prior vocations had been molecular science and engineering, though he was also deeply interested in art. He was also deeply interested in pipes, so he took a little of each of his interests and turned it into a career as one of America’s premier artisan pipe makers. That’s how it was for about a decade, between 2009 and 2019, before Remington withdrew once more from the artisan scene.
As with so many popular pipe shapes, horns were not invented by the Danes, but were reinvented by them, to the point where the shape is now all but synonymous with Danish pipe making. In the 1960s, two native Swedes—one based in Denmark (Sixten Ivarsson), one in his nation of birth (Bo Nordh)—created the Oliphant, or Oliphant, a design evocative of mammalian horns and tusks and one of the very few pipe shapes to embody a simple C-curve. Over the decades that followed the horn established by Ivarsson and Nordh would be interpreted and reinterpreted by various Danish greats, including Former, Tom Eltang, and the late Jess Chonowitsch, and indeed soon moved beyond Scandinavia entirely, into new artisan scenes such as that of America. This horn from Adam Remington certainly retains a little of the original Oliphant, especially by way of its flattened shank, though it also takes a very different direction with the bowl, opting for a round, trumpeting rim, rather than the original’s paneled front face. It’s also incredibly lightweight, making for a horn shape that is both distinctive and quite practical.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original leather sleeve.
