Hungary

Hungary’s presence in contemporary high-grade pipe making is represented at MBSD primarily through the work of Peter Tóth. Living in a small Hungarian village where pipes were difficult to obtain, Tóth began making his own and gradually developed a distinctive approach to the craft.

His tobacco pipes combine naturalistic freehand shaping with a rustic, practical character. Sandblasting, plateau briar, carved details, bold color combinations, and accents made from woods such as ebony, Osage orange, black palm, and cornel may appear throughout his work.

Tóth’s designs include Eggs, Blowfish shapes, Devils Anse pipes, Shields, and other freehands that emphasize comfortable handling and dependable engineering. MBSD’s Hungarian category may include new pipes received from their makers as well as occasional smoked or unsmoked estate examples obtained through the secondary market.
