Bruno Nuttens

Belgian artisan Bruno Nuttens began his career restoring tobacco pipes before learning to make his own under the guidance of French master Pierre Morel Jr. Now based in France, Nuttens combines the traditions of Saint-Claude with techniques refined during time spent in the workshop of Danish artisan Tom Eltang. The result is a body of work that moves naturally between classic European shapes and more contemporary handmade designs.

Nuttens is especially known for his long, lightweight Bing billiards, inspired by the pencil-shanked pipes associated with Bing Crosby, and for his slender “Twiggy” shapes. His Heritage series uses decades-seasoned, pre-turned stummels sourced from historic Saint-Claude warehouses. Nuttens carefully completes and finishes these preserved bowls, fitting them with hand-cut mouthpieces to create what might be considered a collaboration across generations of French pipe making. His broader portfolio includes fully handmade pipes, collaborative pieces, and multiple commissions for the Stokkebye Pipe of the Year.

MBSD’s changing selection of Bruno Nuttens pipes may include new, estate, and unsmoked estate examples from his Bing, Mini Bing, Heritage, and fully handmade series. From lightweight classics built around seasoned Saint-Claude stummels to more adventurous one-of-a-kind designs, the collection illustrates how Nuttens bridges traditional French pipe making and the modern artisan movement.

Bruno Nuttens Tobacco Pipe FAQ

Bruno Nuttens is a Belgian artisan pipe maker based in France. He started out restoring pipes, learned to make them under French master Pierre Morel Jr, and later spent time in Tom Eltang's workshop. Besides making his own pipes, he teaches the craft, and his students include Chris Herriot and Christophe Wolff.

The Bing is the long, lightweight, pencil-shanked billiard that first made Nuttens famous. It is named after Bing Crosby, who was often photographed with a pipe like it. Nuttens sources the bowls from the old warehouses of Saint-Claude, where they have had years to season. After the Bing's success he added the Mini Bing, a smaller, even lighter version that still holds a good bowl of tobacco. His other signature is the Twiggy, a long, slender and remarkably light Dublin, which can be seen as a modern, functionalist take on the French fleur shapes of his first teacher, Pierre Morel.

Heritage pipes start as seasoned, pre-turned Saint-Claude bowls that Nuttens finishes himself, fitting hand-cut stems and sometimes metal accents. Hand Made pipes are made entirely from scratch, from the briar block to the stem cut from rod. Heritage stems used to be mostly hand-cut acrylic, and some now come in ebonite.

Hand Made pipes are carved entirely from scratch and graded from A to AAAAA (Grade A, AA, AAA and so on). More letters mean better briar, cleaner grain and better overall craftsmanship. Heritage pipes are graded H1 to H4, in ascending order. They are made from seasoned, pre-turned Saint-Claude stummels that Nuttens finishes and fits with custom stems. Bing pipes are graded B1 to B4, in ascending order. Lower grades are often sandblasted or rusticated, while higher grades like B3 and B4 are smooth. Early Bings were made before the Bing had its own grades, so they carry Heritage grades such as H3.

As of 2025, Nuttens had made three of Erik Stokkebye's 4th Generation Pipes of the Year, a record he shares only with Tom Eltang. One was the 2022 pipe for the brand's 10th anniversary, a light, stacked Dublin with a horn accent.
