Description
It might seem strange to say, but some of the finest, most sought after pipes in the Anglo-French tradition are, today, made in Sweden. Sweden’s role in so-called Danish pipe design—better understood as Scandinavian design—can hardly be overstated, given that it is the land that bore Sixten Ivarsson, Bo Nordh, Bjorn Bengtsson, Bengt Carlson, and Love Geiger and Sara Mossberg. Yet it is also the land of Martin Vollmer and Anders Nilsson, the two half-brothers behind the Vollmer & Nilsson make.
While Vollmer and Nilsson are certainly versatile, and are able to produce remarkably beautiful “Danish” or “Scandinavian” shapes, the quality and demand exhibited by their more classical renditions persists at a level perhaps not seen since the golden age of English pipe manufacturing. While the last Vollmer & Nilsson pipe we had in was comparable to, for example, a Dunhill Dead Root or Comoy’s Specimen, this one leans closer to early French designs, while also bearing a deep, ring grain sandblast and a contrast stain more contemporary in the Anglo-French scene. Perhaps one might think of it as a mix of the old world of Saint Claude and the newer world of Bill Taylor’s Ashton. As with the previous Vollmer & Nilsson pipe we had in this one is just as well crafted on the inside as it is on the out. Vollmer and Nilsson were collectors of high-grade pipes long before they made their own, possessing pipes by the likes of the aforementioned Ivarsson, Nordh, and Bengtsson. They know of the importance of function just as much as of form.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, and comes with its original leather sleeve.
