Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
Peterson’s Sherlock Holmes pipes are, today, a staple of the Irish make’s catalog. Originally, there was just one model, which 1987, but in the decades since, the Sherlock Holmes has grown into whole line of pipes, each of which finds its namesake in some aspect of Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective stories. This one, for example, is the Baker Street, named for Sherlock’s place of residence in London’s City of Westminster, a stout, slightly tall bulldog that first debuted around 1990. This one is from 1995, during what is commonly known as the “Dublin Era” of Peterson’s ownership and output, and wears a light, natural finish now typically only found on Peterson’s high-grade pipes.
The condition is very good. Some finish fading and slight charring of the inner rim, and a few very small, superficial scratches on the bowl.
