Description

W.O. Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans “Former” Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen.

The “68” was a rather early design belonging to the W.O. Larsen, though it was popular enough to remain in the workshop’s catalog for much of its existence. It’s a relatively traditional shape, too, with just a touch of “Danish-ness” coming from its hybrid figure of the classical brandy and Canadian shapes. But it was no less a W.O. Larsen because of that. In fact, W.O. Larsen produced a whole range of hand-crafted pipes across the spectrum of old and new, and like the contemporary Stanwell make, originally separated designs closer to the former from those closer to the latter in their catalog (for Stanwell, this was the difference between the “Hand-Cut” and the “Standard,” whereas for W.O. Larsen it was “Handmade” and “Fancy”). Crisply sandblasted and dressed in a burgundy stain, this Super line “68” is an interesting throwback to the beginnings of the “Danish” style, in addition to simply being a good looking, well made pipe.

The condition is good. Some inner rim charring.
