WO Larsen Super 47 Sandblasted Bent Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Out of stock

Description

WO Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe-making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans “Former” Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen.

The “47” was a relatively early design made by the W.O. Larsen workshop, appearing in catalogs dating back to the beginning of the 1960s. As was typical of many Danish pipes back then, it was a strikingly classical shape, evoking the bent billiards and brandies of traditional Anglo-French briars, though with a slightly more plump and supple figure than one might find elsewhere in Europe or America. Given that it did appear around the beginnings of the W.O. Larsen workshop, it may well be one of the shapes designed by its then-foreman, Sven Knudsen, though it’s a lovely one regardless of its creator. This particular example, based on its nomenclature, looks more like a 1970s make, though it still adheres faithfully to the “47” as it was first conceived.

The condition is good. Some rim darkening and slight finish fading.
